Gum Grafting Costs

Gum Grafting

There are various things which can cause receding gums such as genetics, aggressive brushing, and gum disease. When the gums begin to recede, it can expose the tooth’s root. This can cause sensitivity, especially to hot and cold things. Gum grafting is a common treatment used to cover an exposed root and restore the gums.

Gum Grafting Cost

A gum graft costs an average of $600-$1,200 per tooth. The cost will vary based on things such as the severity of the issue, type of tissue being used, and if a dentist or  periodontist is performing the procedure. A gum graft which uses donor material typically costs more than a graft using tissue obtained from the patient's own mouth.

Gum Contouring

Gum contouring is used to modify the shape and appearance of the gums, making them more attractive. It is possible for a patient to receive gum contouring along with the gum graft which will increase the cost of the procedure to about $1,000-$3,000 per tooth.

Procedure

Gum grafts are typically performed by a periodontist. It is possible for some dentists to perform the procedure. The doctor will use a local anesthetic to numb the grafting site. The patient may also be given a mild sedative to help them relax during the procedure. The procedure will begin with the periodontist making a small cut at the graft site to create a pocket where the graft tissue is placed. The area will then be sutured closed.

When the graft tissue is harvested from the patient's mouth, the periodontist may cover it with a putty-type material while it heals. The patient may also be given a mouth guard which covers the roof of the mouth while it heals. This aids in stopping the bleeding, preventing the tongue from contacting the stitches, and keeping the site clean.

Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a few days following the procedure. Most patients can resume routine activities and return to work within a day. When donor tissue is used, patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort. The healing period will typically take a few days. Graft tissue which is harvested from the patient's own mouth can result in additional discomfort and prolong the healing process to a week or more.

Additional Costs

There can be various additional costs which may include things such as a periodontal diagnosis exam and X-Rays. Additional procedures may increase the overall cost of the treatment. Patients without dental insurance can work with the office to discuss financing options and payment plans. Patients may also consider seeking treatment at a dental school which typically offers a reduced rate for treatment.

Insurance and Finding and Provider

Patients with dental insurance should first check with their insurance provider regarding approved dentists and periodontists. It can also be helpful to ask friends and family for a recommendation. In many cases, the patient’s general dentist will give them a referral to a periodontist.
