OPTIONS FOR TEETH WHITENING

For people with yellow or discolored teeth, having whiter teeth would be a dream come true. Thankfully, there are quite a few different options for teeth whitening—some of which are available in stores, while others need to be performed by a dentist. In order to understand more about which choice is right for you, it’s good to understand what whitening is and what your options are.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a form of cosmetic dentistry that involves the use of chemicals to brighten a person’s teeth. While dentists are able to perform professional whitening, there are also a variety of other teeth whitening options.

Whitening Options

If you are considering teeth whitening, there are a few different options that you can go with. Which option is right for you may depend on the severity of the discoloration of your teeth, as well as the suggestions of your dentist. Some of the different whitening options include:

  • Whitening Toothpaste
  • Whitening Gum
  • Whitening Mouthwash
  • Whitening Strips
  • Professional Whitening

If you only have a minor issue with the whiteness of your teeth, you may want to consider first trying whitening toothpaste, mouthwash or gum. If the discoloration is more severe, other options like strips or professional whitening may be considered—although professional whitening is the ideal choice.

Why Professional Whitening?

While at-home strips are available, professional whitening is a better option. This is because a professional teeth whitening will be done under the supervision of your dentist—using only the highest quality whitening solution. Your dentist will also be able to take a look at your teeth, and see if you are a good candidate for whitening. A huge mistake that people make is using whitening strips without first checking with their dentist to see if their teeth are strong enough to support the whitening solution that strips use. If the enamel of your teeth aren’t strong enough to support the whitening solution used either with strips or professional whitening, you can end up doing severe damage to your teeth. Because of this, it’s important to visit your dentist before using any more intensive forms of whitening.

Along with the supervision of a dentist, a professional whitening is ideal because the dentist has access to the best bleaching solutions available. This will allow you to get the brightest smile in the least amount of time.

Cost of Professional Whitening

If you decide that professional whitening is right for you, there will likely be two different choices—at-home and in-office whitening. In-office whitening can be done in as little as one visit, and provides amazing results. In-office whitening is a little more expensive, though, and is generally around $350. The other option is at-home whitening, which will take a lot longer but costs less—generally around $250.
