Implant Supported Dentures vs Conventional Dentures

Before we can make comparisons between the new implant supported dentures teeth replacement solution and the traditional, conventional dentures, we need to explain exactly what they are and how they work. Once we walk through the procedures it will be much easier to understand the cost and benefit comparisons. If you are a candidate for a multiple teeth replacement you will want to have an examination and a discussion with your dentist to see what will be best for you, your health and your future.

The Traditional Conventional Dentures Process

If you have had an unfortunate accident or health reasons that resulted in having multiple teeth pulled, the conventional denture has been the baseline solution for many years. The process begins with your dentist making an impression of your arch that is without any teeth. This impression is then sent to a dental lab where a flesh colored acrylic tray will be fabricated to sit snuggly on the gums of that arch. The tray will hold either porcelain or ceramic artificial crowns that will mimic your natural teeth.  With the application of some mild adhesive the tray is put in place and you have new replacement teeth.

The Implant Supported Denture Procedure

A dental implant is the gold standard to replace one tooth. The dentist will surgically place a titanium post in your jawbone where the tooth is missing. Once this post has had a chance to fuse to the bone, an extension or abutment is placed to extend the post to the gumline. An artificial crown will be placed on this abutment, and you now have an artificial tooth that looks totally natural.

The implant supported dentures combines these two solutions. An in-depth examination will help determine if you will benefit most from four, six or even eight titanium posts. These posts are all surgically placed and allowed to grow into the bone. The acrylic tray of the dentures is designed with snaps on the inside or back side surface. These nylon snaps sit perfectly on these abutment posts once they are stable, and now you have the best of both solutions.

The Benefits of Both Implant Supported Dentures and Conventional Dentures

Both replacement solutions are designed to be removable to encourage you to not only clean them properly every evening but to also exercise good oral hygiene with the soft tissues in your mouth. The conventional dentures can be very cost effective. This economic solution comes with a price though in that the average life expectancy is only five to ten years. You also can run the risk of your jawbone atrophying and losing bone density.

The implant supported dentures come at a much higher price but deliver value that offsets that price. They can last for more than twenty years and those titanium posts encourage your jawbone to maintain bone density. They also are far more secure in their placement, no moving around, and will deliver biting and chewing sensations not available with the conventional method. They also have been known to improve speech. Make sure you have a good consultation before you make any decision on a teeth replacement solution.
