How Many Teeth Does an Implant Supported Bridge Have?
A dental implant bridge can be used to replace multiple missing teeth. The dentist can use 1-8 dental implants to support the bridged teeth. The bridge can contain 2-14 prosthetic teeth. The number of implants needed will vary based on the number of missing teeth and their location. In most cases, two implants can be used to support 3-4 missing teeth. The dentist can also use 4-6 implants for replacing all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. When all of the teeth are replaced, it is called full mouth dental implants or all-on-4.
With a simple implant bridge, 3-4 teeth can typically be replaced with a bridge. Implants are placed into the jaw at either end of the gap. Once the implants are placed, the bridge is attached to the implants. The cantilever and front teeth implant bridges are two additional types of bridges which are commonly used.
Implant Supported Bridge
The dentist will place two implants on both ends of the gap where the missing teeth are located. While the implants can be placed next to one another, this causes a lack of support for the end of the bridge and is not common practice. A bridge which has an unsupported area is called a cantilever. In some cases, the dentist will chose to place three implants with three individual crowns. While this solution is more expensive, it is more natural in its appearance and easier for the patient to clean.
Cantilever Implant Bridges
A cantilever implant bridge can be used if the length of the unsupported portion of the crown is less than 1/2 of the overall length of the prosthetic. After the implants have healed and fused to the jaw, the bridge can be connected. A bridge costs less than individual implants as fewer implants are needed. Cantilever implant bridges may be used when there is limited space available for the implants. At least 1mm of bone must exist between the implants.
Individual implants with individual crowns are ideal. Maintaining stimulation to the jaw helps to preserve the bone and gums. In addition, individual teeth are easier to clean and more natural in their appearance. Cantilever bridges are more affordable as they require fewer implants.
Procedure Cost
The overall cost for an implant supported bridge will vary based on the number of teeth the bridge will replace. It is most common for an implant bridge to contain 3-4 prosthetic teeth. A simple implant bridge will cost about $10,000 – $15,000 or more. This cost estimate will include tooth extraction, two dental implants, and the bridge for 3-4 teeth. If additional procedures such as bone grafting or sedation is needed, it will increase the cost.
PRF Dental Implant Techniques
A new technique called platelet rich fibrin (PRF) can aid in expediting the healing process for placing implants. When a cantilever bridge is being used, the implant should be in the area allowing for the larger implant. In most cases, this is at the site of the larger tooth. It is important to consider cosmetic aspects for placement as well. This is especially important when the bridge is visible when the patient smiles or is located towards the front of the mouth.
