IS GUM CONTOURING PAINFUL?

Gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure. When gums cover too much of the teeth, it can cause an aesthetic concern. Gum reshaping or contouring removes excess gum tissue to expose more tooth surface and create a balanced gum line and beautiful smile.

Many patients who are candidates for gum contouring inquire if it hurts. The goal is to ensure patients experience the least amount of pain possible.

During the initial consultation, the procedure is reviewed and the best treatment option is evaluated. This includes determining the desired gum line shape and discussing any additional concerns.

On the day of treatment, the priority is to ensure patients are relaxed and comfortable. Going to the dentist can be a source of anxiety for many people and it is critical to ensure all patients feel comfortable.

Sedation To Ensure A Comfortable Experience

Optional sedation is offered to help patients stay calm and to make the experience more comfortable.

One available option is oral sedation. This is administered in the form of a medication that is taken upon arrival at the facility. Sedation helps patients feel calm and somewhat drowsy which aids in alleviating concerns. Patients should arrange for transportation following the procedure, as the effects of the medication will wear off gradually.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas can also be offered. This option is continuously administered through a mask placed over the nose. Similar to the oral sedation, this form of sedation provides a worry-free feeling. Nitrous oxide is a popular option because the effects will wear off a few minutes after it is administered.

Additional resources can aid in comfort during the procedure such as warm blankets, neck support pillows and eye covers.

Gum Contouring Procedure And Recovery

Advanced equipment is used to work quickly and minimize any discomfort. In the past, a scalpel was used for gum contouring, however this is no longer part of the procedure. A soft tissue laser is used that does not cut or burn the gums. The laser simply breaks down excess tissue on a microscopic level.

This causes the unwanted tissue to disconnect and disappear. A precise laser beam gently shapes the gum line and contours a new, beautiful smile.

The recovery time is minimal due to the precise laser sealing gum tissue during the procedure. There is little to no bleeding which also reduces the risk of infection. For the recovery process patients can expect to:

  • Return to normal activities the same day
  • See instant results
  • Feel completely recovered in as little as a few days

While pain is usually minimal, an over the counter pain relief medication, such as ibuprofen can be taken. Aspirin should be avoided as it can thin the blood and cause additional bleeding.

Gums will be sensitive following the surgery. You should avoid eating anything hard or crunchy. These types of foods can irritate the gum tissue and extend recovery time. Use caution and stick with softer foods until the gums have healed.

Rest is also critical for healing. Activity should be limited for at least a few days. Strenuous activity increases blood flow which can worsen the pain, swelling and even cause additional bleeding.

It can take a few days up to a couple weeks to heal from gum reshaping. During the recovery process, your pain should lessen. If pain becomes worse or unmanageable, contact the office right away.
