Can Shifting Teeth Be Corrected
There are a number of reasons that our teeth may shift out of alignment including gum disease, bruxism, missing teeth, and malocclusion. Fortunately, there are also a number of treatment options available to fix shifting teeth too! A process called mesial drift happens when the teeth slowly move towards the front of the mouth.
Gum disease leads to gum recession and bone loss, allowing for mobility in the teeth. Additionally, when a tooth is missing or extracted, the surrounding teeth shift in an effort to close up the space left by the missing tooth. Teeth grinding (bruxism), dental decay, and even genetics all play a role in shifting teeth.
Orthodontic treatment works to correct tooth alignment, typically in younger patients, but if the patient does not wear their retainer, the teeth will slowly begin to drift back to their original position.
Can shifting teeth be corrected?
The most common treatment for shifting teeth is orthodontic therapy which can be achieved with either traditional braces or clear aligners. Some patients may be a candidate for porcelain veneers if there is not a significant correction to be made. Veneers have the added benefit of improving the overall appearance of your smile if that is a concern.
Traditional braces use a system of metal brackets that are affixed to each tooth with an archwire threaded through the brackets and held in place with small rubber bands. The archwire is tightened and adjusted to push, pull, and rotate teeth into proper alignment. Braces are the best option for major cases that need a significant amount of correction.
Clear aligner therapy works the same as braces but instead of metal brackets and wires, the teeth are shifted into alignment with the use of a progressive series of clear plastic trays. Clear aligners may not be ideal for more severe cases but for those who need minor adjustments, clear aligners are great!
Porcelain veneers are the fastest way to correct shifting teeth. The veneers actually give you a whole new smile and can be fabricated to make any other changes to your teeth that would make you the happiest. The size, shape, and color of the teeth can all be changed with porcelain veneers. Veneers are only appropriate for minor shifting cases since the teeth need to be somewhat in the correct position before the veneers are placed.
Any shifting needs to be addressed by your dentist to determine the underlying cause. It is important to find the reason that your teeth are suddenly shifting so that it can be treated as well. Some dentists offer orthodontic treatment but if they do not, they will be able to refer you to an orthodontist. If you prefer veneers, your dentist will be able to provide treatment. Be sure to visit your dentist as soon as you notice any movement in your teeth to keep your mouth healthy!
