More Information About Welcome, NC
If you drove straight south out of Winston Salem on Highway 52 in 15 miles you would run into Welcome, North Carolina. You will have travelled over some slightly rolling hills with scattered woodlands and some open country as well. If you have the windows open and its summer you will feel the humidity. If it were the winter you might encounter a frequent ice and sleet storm.
You are still in the northern Piedmont. An area of transition from the eastern coastal plains to the Appalachian Mountains to the immediate west.
Welcome to Welcome, A Friendly Place
That is what is on the sign as you enter this small town. With a population today of right around 5,000 residents the town is not growing by leaps and bounds by any means. The town itself is home to a nationwide communication distribution center, that being Walker and Associates. The small town is nationally known though as the home to Richard Childress Racing. If that left you scratching your head how about we tell you that they won the NASCAR Premier Cup Series championship six times with the iconic driver Dale Earnhardt as well as the Daytona 500 three times with Earnhardt, Kevin Harvick and in 2018 with Austin Dillion. There is a museum in town featuring the history of the Racing team.
The Triad
When looking at this quaint small town you need to shift your gaze to the Piedmont Triad to start to identify some amenities. The Triad consists of Winston-Salem, High Point and Greensboro. The Triad has been slated to have a population of over 1.6 million residents. You can also get to the Raleigh-Durham area in less than an hour and half so that would make for a great weekend trip.
Winston-Salem
With a population of over a quarter of a million this city is the closest to Welcome. With a very diverse history dating back to 1753 it has seem some very interesting twists and turns in the road. Since 1772 a world famous event takes place in Salem, the Easter sunrise service at the Moravian Cemetery drawing thousands. Then throw in the fact since 1880 there were more than 40 tobacco factories in Winston. Now introduce textiles with the Hanes factory. In 1940 60% of the workforce worked in tobacco or textiles. Finally, in 1929, the Reynolds skyscraper was built that two years later was the model for the Empire State Building.
High Point
Located due east of Welcome 20 miles, High Point is called the Furniture Capital of the World. High Point has 111,000 residents and has seen more than 40 furniture manufacturers back in the early 1900s. Today it has the largest furniture market in the world drawing more than 100,000 retailers twice a year to place annual orders.
Greensboro
Three major highways intersect in Greensboro which is 35 miles northeast of Welcome. You can jump on Interstates 85, 40 or 73 from Greensboro. With a population of over 285,000 it makes a very diverse contribution to the Triad and neighboring towns like Welcome.
