More Information About Walkertown, NC

Walkertown, North Carolina is a small community located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. European settlers forever altered the history of the region in the 1700’s. Prior to this, the region was inhabited by various native tribes who thrived off of the region’s abundance. Once Europeans began immigrating to the newly established British colonies, the natives were displaced and European settlements took over.

The first settlers into the Piedmont Triad were religious minorities in the region such as the Quakers, Moravians, Scotch-Irish Catholics, and German Lutherans. They settled there hoping to establish their own settlements where they could maintain their religious communities. Walkertown’s name comes from Dr. Robert Walker. He lived in the region in the late 1700’s.

Today

Today the town remains small. The current population is around 5,000 people. Like many of the other towns in the region, Walkertown survives because of its proximity to the big three cities of the Piedmont Triad, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point.

Things to do

Due to the town’s size many of the things to do are located outside of the town itself in the surrounding region.

Many visitors come to the Piedmont Triad every year to take in the rich history of the region. The region has gone to great lengths to preserve the history for these jvisitors. If you are looking for history there is always something to see. The most notable of the museums is the Old Salem Historic District. This museum is a preserved portion of the original Moravian settlement. There are hundreds of preserved buildings to see and tour. In addition to the buildings, the museum employs actors to dress in period age attire and interact with visitors. When visiting the museum you will be transported back in time and feel like you are apart of the original settlement. There are only a few places in the country where you can have this kind of an immersive experience with history. In addition to the Old Salem Historic District there are several other museums to visit in the area. These include the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the local Children’s Museum, the Winston Cup Museum, the New Winston Museum, the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and the Historic Bethabara Park. No matter which museum you choose you won’t be disappointed.

In addition to the history, the Piedmont Triad is known for the nature located within it. There are several parks to choose from near Walkertown. Perhaps the most well known is Tanglewood Park.
