More Information About Tobaccoville, NC

If you wander out of Winston Salem and point the car to the northwest on Highway 52 in 16 miles you will pull into the small town of Tobaccoville. No secrets here. The town did get its name from the industry.

The History of Tobaccoville

In the early 1870’s a plug chewing tobacco factory was built and owned by Charles Orrendeer. The factory was located on Doral Drive, which is one mile south of where the post office is today. At that time the road was the mail route for a four horse stagecoach travelling from Mt. Airy to Winston Salem. The tobacco factory was the principal landmark in the area and Tobaccoville was suggested for the post office, which was opened in 1887. The railroad came to town shortly thereafter and created more activity and excitement.

Modern History

In 1990 the city of King, North Carolina, only three miles to the north, attempted to annex Tobaccoville. A planning committee was formed and enlisted the services of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. Reynolds had chosen Tabaccoville as the site of their newest, largest and most modern cigarette manufacturing facility and did not want the annexation either. A compromise was reached with King getting a narrow sliver of ground between the towns. This in fact is huge for the city of Tobaccoville, which was incorporated then in 1991, due to the taxes generated by the Reynolds Company. The city since then has the municipal services offered by a community of this size and operates with an elected mayor and city council.
