More Information About Thomasville, NC

History

Thomasville, North Carolina is located in the Piedmont Region of the state. Its history dates back centuries, during which time the land was inhabited by Native American tribes. Beginning in the mid-1700’s European settlers began moving into the region in search of fertile land and religious freedom. The first European settlers into the area all shared a common trait of being religious outsiders. The Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, the Quakers, and German immigrants all moved into the area during this time, displacing the local inhabitants.

Thomasville traces its history back to the building of the North Carolina Railroad in 1855. John Warwick Thomas had purchased land in the region and then pushed to get the railroad to pass through. When he knew it was coming, he quickly built a general store assuming he would capitalize on the upcoming growth of the community. His calculation paid off. The city was incorporated in 1857 and named after its founder.

Throughout the 1800’s the city remained very small. In 1890 there were only 751 residents that called the community home. The furniture making business began in the community in the late 1800’s thanks to its nearby neighbor, High Point. Throughout the 1900’s furniture manufacturing defined the community and its residents. Other manufacturing had moved in also including cotton mills.

Today

Today the city is often called “Chair City” because of the giant replica of a Duncan Phyfe armchair that sits in the town center. It history dates back nearly 100 years and it still is a major landmark of the city. The population today is almost 28,000. Many residents still live off the manufacturing that takes place in the area.

Things to do

The community is home to the state’s oldest annual festival, known as Everybody’s Day. This annual street festival is held every September and is a must for residents of the community and surrounding area. It is home to arts and crafts and antique shopping, live music, great food, and carnival rides.

The city prides itself on representing small town America. Walking through the community is like taking a trip to olden days. This is on display in the local shopping. Some of the most well known spots are vintage and antique stores. This is especially true when shopping for furniture. The city’s history with furniture production means shoppers are guaranteed to find unique and one of a kind items. The highlight of the shopping experience is the Vintage Block, which stretches for several blocks. Here you will find several vintage and antique stores that all offer their own unique shopping experience.

For a town its size, Thomasville is home to an unusually large number of restaurants. There are restaurants of all varieties including American, Mexican, Seafood, Asian, Italian, and of course Southern BBQ. No matter what you are looking for you will easily find it in the community.
The Piedmont is also known for its proximity to nature. The Thom-A-Lex Lake is located just outside of the community is a great place to kick back and relax, take a boat ride, go fishing, or take a swim. All of which can be done with the beautiful backdrop of nature.
