The History of the Hall

Five miles to the southwest is the community of Bethania. In the late 1700s settlers began leaving this small town and made their new homes in the Rural Hall area. The frontier economy continued to attract new settlers. In fact, the first building was a trapper’s cabin built in 1740. The cabin stands today. The town continued to grow after the Civil War and a Benjamin Bitting was appointed the first postmaster. He used his home as the post office. He had a wide hallway from front to back in his home, wide enough to drive a wagon through. The mail started coming in addressed to “The Hall”. Some of the mail ended up in Salem creating confusion. The postmaster added “Rural Hall” to help with the routing of the mail and the name has stuck. In 1887 the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad came through town and a depot was erected. The depot in listed today in the National Register of Historic Places and Rural Hall is now the operational center for the Yadkin Valley Railroad so one can find idling locomotives in the yard in town.

The small town has its own character. Manufacturing leads when it comes to employment opportunities, followed by administration and support, construction, retail and finance and insurance. Over 87% of the small town has a high school education with 18% having a college degree. The unemployment rate is less than the state average, as is the median household income. That though is offset by the housing values being less as well. The community has all the municipal services one would expect of the city of this size. As you reach outside of the town you will find the added value.

This twin community has tons of history and offers a very diverse character. There are eight institutions of higher learning and a vibrant economy. You can put on your calendar to visit the many museum or art galleries one weekend. There are numerous historical venues and attractions to visit. You can eat lunch, hike or bike in one of the 80 parks. Eating is not a problem with over 500 restaurants, wineries and breweries. Rural Hall is a nice, quiet slice of the past sitting next to chunks of the present.
