More Information About Lexington, NC

History

Lexington, North Carolina is located in Davidson County, which sits in the Piedmont Triad. The history of European settlers in the region dates back to the mid 1700s. Before this, various Native American tribes occupied the land for centuries. As Europeans began moving in, the indigenous population began being pushed out. The first European settlers in the region came in 1775 and named the town after the famous city in Massachusetts where the first battle of the Revolutionary War had been fought. The region was sparsely populated for the next 60 years until 1838 when it was officially incorporated. Like most towns in the region, the population took off when industry moved in following the expansion of the North Carolina Railroad. The economy of the community was based on textile and furniture manufacturing, following suit with many of the surrounding communities. High Point, North Carolina, which is just down the road, is known as one of the oldest furniture manufacturing cities in the country.

Today

The population of the city is roughly 19,000 people. Unfortunately, the city has been one of the victims of the de-industrialization of America. Most of the textile and furniture making factories have closed down and moved overseas. The region’s economy has had to adapt since. Lexington, like many other neighboring towns, has become a bedroom community for the larger cities. Many residents therefore live in the town but work in the city.

Things to do

Lexington calls itself the Barbecue Capital of the World and for good reason. Every year the city hosts its annual Barbecue Festival, which is one of the biggest street festivals in the entire state. The community’s claim to fame is that it is home to over 20 barbecue restaurants, meaning that there is roughly one restaurant for every thousand residents. The style of barbecue is pulled pork in a vinegar-based sauce that is slow cooked over a hardwood fire. The barbecue is also well known for its inclusion of the famous “red slaw”. The city has embraced its image of the barbecue capital in many other ways too. One of which is the inclusion of the “Pigs in the City” public art display. This art display includes a large number of “artistic pigs” scattered around the city. Each one is painted and/or decorated by local artists. The display culminates in a yearly festival. The city is also home to the second largest lake in North Carolina, High Rock Lake. This lake is a popular spot throughout the summer for residents of the town and surrounding area. People come for relaxation, water sports, swimming, and boating.

They also come for fishing. High Rock Lake is widely regarded as on of the top fishing lakes in the entire state. It is especially known for bass fishing. In addition to all of that, Lexington is located in one of the country’s most history rich regions. There are numerous museums within driving distance. This is especially true in Winston-Salem where there are preserved districts that replicate what colonial America and the Moravian settlement would have been like.
