History

Like much of North Carolina’s Piedmont Region, Kernersville sits on land that was once inhabited by Native Americans who were eventually forced off of their lands by the incoming European settler invasion. The first European to make his mark in this region was named by Jacob Story. This Irish immigrant came into the area in 1756. Around 15 years later, William Dobson purchased the land from Story and it was named, Dobson’s Crossroads. The land then changed hands in 1817 when Joseph Kerner purchased it. The town was then renamed, Kerner’s Crossroads. The incoming North Carolina Railroad in the late 1800’s caused the town’s population to grow to the point of incorporation, which happened in 1873. The town was then named Kernersville. At the time, the surviving two sons and daughter of Joseph Kerner had inherited the land from their deceased father. Like much of the Piedmont Region, manufacturing became the hallmark of the city.

Today

The population of the city is currently growing. It has increased by over 6,000 people since the year 2000. According to the 2010 census the population was just over 23,000 people. Since 2006, the community has been in a city-improvement phase. Many roads and parks have had work undertaken on them in order to improve the community. One of the highlights of this renovation was the rebuilding of Century Park and the lake in it. This lake had sat drained for years and has since been restocked and reopened for public use.

Things to do

Despite its small size, the community offers many things to do for all ages. One of the top things to do in Kernersville and the surrounding area is take in the country’s rich history. The Piedmont Region’s history is some of the oldest European history in the country. The city has a local museum and train depot that focuses on the town’s history and the history of the railroad in the region. Anyone interested in the intricacies of the region should check it out. The Korner’s Folly is also located in the community. The grandson of Joseph Kerner built this house in the late 1800s. It is known for its unusual architecture. It is also known as being the home of the first private “Little Theater” in the whole United States. The house is so well known that it has even been modeled for an ornament, which has been featured on the White House Christmas tree. In addition to the local museum and Korner’s Folly, the town is also located only 10 miles from Winston-Salem, which is known as one of the top history sites in the country.

Kernersville hosts an annual festival in the fall known as the Honeybee Festival. It is known throughout the region. Festivalgoers can take in live music, great food, kids activities, and shopping. In addition to this festival, the city also hosts a farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday through the spring, summer, and fall. In addition, the Paul J.
