More Information About High Point, NC

History

High Point, North Carolina is located in Guilford County. The region’s original inhabitants were the Cheraw people. The first Europeans to begin settling in the area were Lutheran Germans, Quakers, and Scotch-Irish immigrants. As settlers began streaming into the area because of the fertile lands, they began pushing the Cheraw people out.

The town gets its name because it was located at the furthest northern point of the railroad in North Carolina. The railroad connected the region to the Great Western Plank Road, which ultimately gave it a connection to a major transportation network. This network encouraged industrial development throughout the 19 th century. The city was eventually incorporated in 1859 and immediately was one of the South’s major industrial centers. The city became synonymous with textiles and woodworking. Raw materials were able to come in via the transportation network and finished products were able to go out. As time went on, the community became known for its manufacturing of furniture.

Today

The population of High Point is roughly 109,000 people. The city is still known for its furniture manufacturing and textile industries. An unofficial nickname of the city is the “Home Furnishing Capital of the World”. It is known as an international city in North Carolina because of its annual furniture market that brings in people from around the world seeking furniture from the over 100,000 vendors that set up shop. John Wesley University, High Point University, and South University all call the city home.

Things to do

The community is home to several museums that are dedicated to the history of the community, furniture manufacturing, and the south. One of the most well known spots is the Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library. This library is home to the world’s largest collection of reading materials on the history of interior design and furniture making. Additional museums worth checking out are the High Point Museum and Historic Park, the Museum of Old Domestic Life, and the Rosetta C. Baldwin Museum. All of which offer their own unique take on the history of the city and the region.

The Piedmont region is also known for its proximity to nature and the community is no different. The City Lake Park is located in the heart of the city. This park rests on the banks of a lake that takes center stage during the summer months. Residents and visitors use it for fishing, water sports, boating, and relaxation. The Piedmont Environmental Center is also located in the town. This center is also located near the shores of the lake and is home to a wildlife sanctuary, animal exhibits and the Greenway Trail. The Greenway Trail is eight miles long and perfect for a relaxing stroll in nature.

In addition to all of those things, the community prides itself on its arts scene. A few notable spots are the Sechrest Gallery and the High Point Community Theater. In addition to those, the city is also known for its most iconic “World’s Largest Chest of Drawers” which has been a staple of the community for almost 100 years.
