More Information About Clemmons, NC

History

Clemmons, North Carolina is located in the Piedmont Region of the state and is a suburb of Winston-Salem. It is in Forsythe County, which was inhabited by natives for centuries before Europeans began settling there. The Piedmont Region’s European history is some of the oldest European history in the country.

The town was originally named Clemmonsville in 1802 after the original settler to the region, Peter Clemmons. He is credited with developing the community that would grow from the settlement. Before the railroad came through, Peter’s great-grandson Edwin had established a lucrative stagecoach business out of the town. The stagecoaches that were made were shipped all over the country. Like most places in the country, the railroad changed everything, including the population. The community remained unincorporated until 1986 at which time it was officially named.

Today

The city thrives as a suburb of Winston-Salem and the manufacturing businesses that call the Piedmont Region home. Today the population is nearly 19,000 people. Its location on Interstate 40 gives its residents access to the entire surrounding region. The city has embraced its past history in the stagecoach business by completing refinishing and displaying the most famous stagecoach to ever come out of the town, the Hattie Butner.

Things to do

One of the most well known spots in Clemmons, is Tanglewood Park. The land’s history dates back to the late 1700s. In the early 1900’s the land was sold to William Neal Reynolds who expanded the land and the manor house on the land. Eventually, the land was used by Mr. Will who created a thriving stable and horseracing empire. His wife loved plants and began a project of creating a garden of native plants on the grounds. Eventually the land was gifted to Forsythe County and is a major attraction today for nature enthusiasts and horse lovers. Each year the park is transformed into one of the region’s most well known Festival of Lights at Christmas time. People travel from all over to see it.
