More Information About Arcadia, NC

Arcadia is a small unincorporated community located in Davidson County, North Carolina. Arcadia is situated outside of Winston-Salem along old Highway 150. Davidson County is located in central North Carolina within the Piedmont region. This area, including Arcadia, is known for its gently rolling hills and valleys with sparse rivers and streams. Arcadia is one of several unincorporated communities in the Davidson County area.

History

Although the community is unincorporated, it has long and rich history similar to many of the small farming communities in the Piedmont area. Settled by migrants from the north, the Arcadia area became a community of hardworking farmers. The Hampton house is a symbol of the history of Arcadia. The home is a stop for visitors located in the Arcadia community. The two-story I-house built around 1879, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The term I-house refers to a style of houses in this area of the United States built in around the colonial period. The “I” refers to the popularity of this style of home in the rural farm territories of Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. A typical I-house generally includes gables on the side of the house, at least 2 rooms across and one room deep, and is generally 2 stories high. From the exterior the I-house appears very symmetrical. These farm homes were commonly built out of materials that were locally available including wood, bricks, and stones.

Today

Today the community of Arcadia is primarily residential, and the number of businesses and commercial retail is limited. Retail chains do have a small presence in the community, with residents having access to Ace Hardware, Rite Aid or the Food Lion. The few local businesses are well known and popular, including the Arcadia Nursery and Speedy Lohr’s Barbecue. As Winston-Salem continues to expand, Arcadia is becoming a more popular place for commuters and those interested in paying lower taxes than the neighboring communities to live. The size of the community is only predicted to continue to grow. What was once farm land has been excavated for housing developments and residential development.

Northwest and Friedberg Elementary Schools are located in Arcadia and are both part of the Davidson County School System. These two elementary schools feed students into the North Davidson Middle School and North Davidson High School located in Welcome, North Carolina.

A nearby attraction, the Uwharrie National Forest is a national forest region that reaches into Davidson county. The Uwharrie is named for the Uwharrie Mountains, which used to sit where the forest stands today. The forest is approximately 45 miles to the west of Arcadia and is has estimated square footage of 50,645 acres. This makes it the smallest of the four National Forests in North Carolina. The forest is managed by the North Carolina National Forests located in Asheville, North Carolina. Despite being managed from Ashville, the park does have a local ranger district office. The Birkhead Mountains Wilderness, is the only officially designated wilderness areas within the Uwharrie.
